Arboretum At Night: Sounds of the Forest
The night forest pulses with the sounds of melodious songs, clicking calls, flapping wings, and shuffling feet. Frogs, crickets, bats, and other animals are on the move; meeting mates, finding food, and warning others to stay away! Come out and discover which creatures are sounding off, participate in a special frog symphony, and take a night hike into a forest rich in sounds and excitement. All participants will receive a free night forest recording for attending this event. Cost is $18 for members, $30 for non-members. Pre-registration required. Identifying and Understand Mushrooms: The Mysterious Kingdom
Mushrooms are an often misunderstood kingdom of organisms that absorb their food through the decomposition of organic matter. This introductory class will acquaint you with the various groups of mushrooms and their characteristics, including identification, anatomy, and life-cycle. The economic value of mushrooms and their use as food and medicine throughout history will be discussed, although the focus of the class will be on mushroom identification and the tools to distinguish one group from another. A Saturday field trip to collect, group, and classify mushrooms with a group of well-known mushroom hunters is included. Cost is $40 for members, $55 for non-members. 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Chinese Brush Painting
Learn and improve your watercolor painting skills in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. This class will cover a wide variety of brushstrokes and techniques. Through step by step instruction, students will create their own watercolor painting. Each technique will be demonstrated by the instructor, Peihong Dong, one of China's most well -known artists. Students will receive individual attention adapted to their particular skill level and interests. Beginners are welcome! Cost is $95 for members, $125 for non-members. Nature 101: Grassland Ecology
Nature 101 classes are introductory natural history courses designed to introduce participants with the animals and plants found in our area. These hands-on classes provide a base of natural history knowledge on which to build. It’s a chance to meet new friends and learn more about nature. It's also an opportunity for teachers to earn 2 hours of SBEC credit and for Texas Master Naturalists to earn Advanced Training. Almost one-fourth of the Earth's land area is grassland. Come learn about the plants and animals that exist in this disappearing ecosystem. Cost is $25 per class, $10 for active AMIGO volunteers.
