Smith Point Hawkwatch Field Trip

Witness one of nature's greatest spectacles - the migration of thousands of raptors from their breeding grounds in North America to their winter homes in the tropics. Smith Point, in Chambers County, Texas is a small peninsula that extends into Galveston Bay. Migrating hawks will linger here before continuing over or around the Bay. The large hawkwatch tower is a perfect place to see huge kettles of Broad-winged Hawks, Mississippi Kites, and other species - 25 different raptors were counted last year including Bald Eagle. The trees around Smith Point are also a great place to see migrating songbirds.

We will leave the Arboretum at 7:00 a.m. in a rented van for the 90 minute drive to Smith Point and arrive back by 4:00 p.m.

Bring a sack lunch and see more raptors in one day than you've seen in a lifetime.

Trip Leader: Bill Eley is Program Development Director at the Houston Arboretum. Bill has over 30 years of birding experience on the Gulf Coast and all over the world.
