The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center presents Monica Pope
Join Chef Monica Pope, one of Houston’s most award-winning and innovative chefs and owner of the award-winning restaurant t’afia as she shares techniques for cooking simple, healthy dishes. The focus will be on how to utilize locally-grown organic ingredients in cooking healthy meals as she demonstrates her seasonal garden-to-table approach.
She is a 2007 James Beard Award Nominee/Best Chef Southwest. Her restaurant venture, t’afia, has received local and national accolades and has been featured on 7 different Best New Restaurant lists, including Bon Appetit Magazine, Gourmet Magazine & Texas Monthly Magazine. T’afia was also chosen Best New Restaurant in 2004 and Best Restaurant in 2005 by The Houston Press. Monica Pope is the only Texas woman chef to be named a Top 10 Best New Chef by Food & Wine Magazine (1996). Pope is one of the founders of the Midtown Farmer’s Market as well as a Co-Chair of the Chef Advisory Board for Recipe for Success, a Houston-based organization dedicated to combating childhood obesity. She is currently working on her first book, entitled “Eating Hope: Caution, Chef May Be Starving,” an insightful, poignant and humorous look at a woman’s place in the (restaurant) kitchen.
