Nature Needs You - Join our Volunteers!
If you enjoy being outdoors or sharing your love of nature with others, consider joining the volunteers at the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center.
Volunteers help with education programs, conservation projects, guest services, special events, and behind-the-scenes support.
Opportunities are available both weekends and weekdays, and the commitment is as little as 2 hours a month.
Some of the things you can do as a volunteer:
- Work outside on trails and conservation projects
- Introduce nature to the next generation as a School Tour Guide
- Learn about nature up-close as part of the Discovery Room Team
- Share your appreciation for the natural resources as a Weekend Tour Guide
- For more information, view our volunteer opportunities.
Now's a great time to start!
Next Volunteer Orientation is Saturday, February 13, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Join us to learn about the Arboretum's history, mission and programs, take a tour of the building and grounds and find out more about the opportunities available.
At the orientation, you can fill out a volunteer application and schedule a time to meet with our volunteer coordinator.
To register for the orientation or for more information, email.
Become an AMIGO of the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center!
AMIGO stands for the Aline McAshan Interpretive Guide Organization – one of the first volunteer jobs at the Nature Center was to lead tours for the public. Aline McAshan was the mother-in-law of Mrs. Susan McAshan who contributed the initial funding for a building for children’s nature study in 1967. In 1975, volunteers who were building trails and leading tours, organized and formed the AMIGOs.
AMIGO membership is a special, discounted level of Nature Center membership offered only to volunteers. Besides receiving the same benefits as other membership levels, AMIGOs receive a monthly newsletter, and participate in semi-annual social events, field trips, etc.
AMIGO membership is encouraged, but not required of volunteers.
